While at Scary Beasties I worked on several AR projects including markerless tracking (where your phone knows where the AR object should be without a guide image). The commercial projects are using 3D models imported into Unity and are using physical, printed markers to place the objects into the real world via your device’s camera.

The video above is showing footage of 3D items using this markerless system of AR which is part of more recent Android and iOS systems.
